Hauling hot bitumen is a different game from regular fuel transport. The product needs to stay above 160 degrees C from loading to discharge, or it turns into a solid block inside the tank. This 15,000-liter tanker is built specifically for that job. The tank shell is 6mm carbon steel with a full thermal oil jacket circulating heated exhaust gas along the tank walls — it is basically a giant heat exchanger on wheels. A 100mm rockwool insulation layer with stainless steel cladding keeps heat loss under 3 degrees C per hour, even in cold weather.
Loading temperature is typically 180-200 degrees C at the asphalt plant. During transit, the exhaust gas heat exchanger maintains temperature using waste engine heat — the driver just flips a diverter valve in the cab. For longer hauls or overnight parking, a diesel-fired burner kicks in automatically via thermostat. The discharge pump is a gear-type unit with its own heated jacket, pushing about 30 cubic meters per hour of hot bitumen through insulated piping. Temperature readout is redundant: a digital probe with cab display and an analog dial gauge at the rear control station.

Safety on a hot bitumen tanker is not optional. Every opening has a flame arrestor. The tank has both a pressure/vacuum relief valve and an emergency vent that opens mechanically if internal pressure exceeds 0.05 MPa. A thermal relief valve on the heating circuit prevents over-pressurization of the oil jacket. We have put these on the road with contractors in Ethiopia and Bangladesh doing highway and rural road construction — the operators tell us the 100mm insulation makes a real difference when you are parked overnight at a remote site and need to discharge first thing in the morning without an hour of reheating.
